Barnegat man charged for speeding in crash that killed his passenger
The Barnegat man behind the wheel in a single-car crash that claimed the life of his passenger last month in Stafford Township has now been charged with Aggravated Manslaughter and Strict Liability Vehicular Homicide.
Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer announced that Jeydon Lowe, 24, of Barnegat, was also charged with the motor vehicle offenses of Driving While Intoxicated, Reckless Driving and Speeding.
Stafford Police responded on March 25 around 5:30 pm to Stafford Avenue near Hilliard Boulevard.
A 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt operated by Lowe was traveling eastbound on Stafford Avenue at an extremely high rate of speed, according to an investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Vehicular Homicide Unit, Stafford Police and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit.
Lowe lost control of the vehicle as he was trying to make a right-hand turn and he then crashed into a tree.
The passenger in the front seat of the vehicle, Robert Parlin, 24, of Little Egg Harbor, succumbed to his injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Lowe sustained minor injuries and was taken to Southern Ocean County Medical Center.
A search warrant was obtained for a draw of his blood and laboratory results indicated that Lowe had a Blood Alcohol Concentration of nearly .12 percent.
Billhimer said the operator of the motor vehicle is presumed to be over the legal limit where his/her BAC is .08 or greater.
On Tuesday, Lowe surrendered himself to Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Vehicular Homicide Unit Detectives and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Detectives alongside his attorney.
Lowe is lodged in the Ocean County Jail pending a detention hearing.
