500 Pound Shark Caught Off The Jersey Shore
Sharks are having a moment. The news has been filled with stories about shark attacks.
Broadcastingcable.com says "Shark Week" was a huge hit for Discovery Channel.
47 Meters Down: Uncaged, the sequel to the 2017 box office hit, is playing in theaters.
And now, a huge, 500-pound shark has been caught just off the Jersey Shore. According to silive.com, 3 fisherman from Staten Island, NY caught a thresher shark on Sunday near Sandy Hook, NJ. The shark weighed 510 pounds and measured almost 8 feet in length.
One of the fisherman, Joseph Egitto, told silive.com that it took 3 hours to reel in the huge catch.
The 510-pound shark is not the largest thresher shark that has been caught and reported in waters off of New Jersey. According to the New Jersey Division of Fish & Wildlife, a thresher shark weighing 683 pounds was caught by Bennett Fogelberg in 2009.
By the way, the NJ Division of Fish & Wildlife lists a 1,046-pound blue marlin caught in 1986 as the biggest fish ever caught off the coast of New Jersey.
