    Have a Plan of Action...Literally

Develop a plan of how you'll reach your end goal of running 3.1 miles. You might want to begin with walking. Make sure your stretch before you start and after you finish. Over time, increase your run-walking to 30 minutes.

    Shopping

This should be fun especially if you like to shop! You'll need a pair of comfortable running shoes and a sports watch to keep track of your time. Remember to go for comfort here, it isn't a fashion show.

    Go Slow

If most days you're a walker, you may want to begin with a slow jog. Your workout should consist of mostly walking in the beginning until you build up strength to do more. You should always wrap up your workout by walking at least for five minutes to cool down.

Once you're ready to start running, begin with one minute followed with 1-3 minutes of power or a fast paced walk. Bump up your run to walk ratio as you train and you'll be running a 5K in no time!

    Breathe In, Breathe Out

Remembering to breathe properly while running is half the battle. You should always breathe in from your mouth and from your stomach. It's important to supply your working muscles with much needed oxygen.

Train at Your Pace, Nobody Elses

Achieve your running goals at a pace that you and only you are comfortable with. Slow down and take it easy if you feel any pain and especially if you're having a difficult time breathing.
