You're going to steal from a church? Really?

Police in Longport say a local couple is responsible for a Sunday evening theft of money from a collection box at the Church of the Epiphany.

Police say they were called to the church just after 7pm Sunday evening. A release from the Longport Police Department explains what happened next:

Witness on location states to have secured the facility; however in preparing to leave for the evening, she noticed that someone had gained access inside the church. This undisclosed witness further advised to have come in direct contact with a male who stood approximately six feet in height, husky build, and facial hair. This male was said to have been observed removing cash from a secured collection box located in the church. When questioned, he was said to have exited the premise and enter a gold four door sedan located in the church parking lot. A female was identified in the driver seat of the vehicle which was observed heading towards Atlantic City on Atlantic Avenue.

As information was gathered on scene, identities became known. Egg Harbor City Police Department was advised to pick up and hold the two suspects in question out of their town. At approximately 8:55 pm, Egg Harbor City located the suspects and detained them per Longport’s request.

Sean Steudle (33) and Catherine Steudle (35) were taken into custody by Sgt Ray Burgan and SLEO II Matthew Long. Sean Steudle was charged with burglary, theft, criminal mischief, receiving stolen property, and violation of a court restraining order. Catherine Steudle was charged with conspiracy to commit theft. Both parties were released on summons.
