I'm so lucky to have met an amazing man recently. His name is Christian Kane. He's a math teacher at Toms River High School North, and he's taking a tragic event in his life and using it as fuel and drive to build a one-of-a-kind complex for those with special needs.

In 2012, Christian's son Gavin was in a child seat behind his father when a loaded beer truck struck their van. Gavin was left with severe brain trauma.

Christian built a backyard play area for Gavin complete with a trampoline and rubberized surface. It was then that he realized that most special needs children do not have this luxury and that the Field of Dreams must be built.

We're not talking any old playground here. This will be a special needs complex for children and adults. This will be a destination for young and old to enjoy the basic fundamentals of play.

Toms River Township donated the land behind the police station for the inclusive playground. Expect a baseball field, basketball courts, miniature golf, a walking path and more – all with rubberized wood flooring for wheelchair accessibility. And that is just the beginning.

I spoke with Christian on the site of the future Toms River Field of Dreams.

The key right now is fundraising. Please visit tomsriverfieldofdreams.com, follow them on Facebook for the latest events and construction progress updates.

If you build it they will come!
