Since 2009, Rock of Ages has been a steady part of the Broadway experience in NYC - now the hit play is in theaters starting Friday.  This week's version of "The Playlist" salutes this rock musical with the great 80s music that outlines this production.

Rock of Ages actually began in July of 2005 in Los Angeles, and the success was immediate!  By 2006, the show then succeeded in Las Vegas to sold out crowds and great reviews - just a matter of time before this show would hit New York.

October 16th, 2008 saw Rock of Ages open Off-Broadway at New World Stages and saw an early breakout star in former American Idol contestant Constantine Maroulis (he would go on to earn a Tony Award nomination, and wind up in the new film version).  By March 20th, 2009 the musical landed on Broadway at the Brooks Atkinson Theater, and the show is still running at the Helen Hayes Theater.  This year Rock of Ages has done over $10 Million worth of business.

The buzz is strong for the film's debut on Friday with a very strong cast - Alec Baldwin, Paul Giamatti, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Russell Brand, Bryan Cranston, Mary J. Blige and Tom Cruise.  The trailer should peak your interest more.

The time period and the music may be the bigger star of this film, so if have a love for 80s rock you may be in heaven!  This brings us to this week's edition of The Playlist - all of these songs have been a part of Rock of Ages.  You may want to consider these 20 songs as the Ultimate 80s iPod mix - feel free to share with the kids, and if they go to the movie you may find them asking who originally did certain songs.  The Playlist should help in that area:

REO Speedwagon -- Keep On Loving You

Journey -- Don't Stop Believin'

Asia -- Heat Of The Moment

Quarterflash -- Harden My Heart
