The Countdown to April 8th: Atlantic City City Hall to Close, Employees Will Stop Getting Paid
As the state continues to debate over how it wishes to take over Atlantic City, Mayor Don Guardian is planning on closing city hall next month while maintaining essential city services. Without state aid, city workers will stop getting paychecks in a matter of days.
In a press release Monday afternoon, Atlantic City Mayor Don Guardian said, “the city is in discussions with the State to avoid and forestall what may be an imminent financial predicament. Unfortunately, due to financial circumstances beyond our control, we will be forced to close City Hall starting on Friday, April 8th, 2016 at 4:30pm. We anticipate this closure to remain in effect until at least Monday, May 2nd, 2016."
May 2nd is the date when the city expects to receive their next payments of quarterly taxes.
Mayor Guardian says essential services such as police, fire, revenue collections, and some public works departments will continue to operate as normal, but essential and non-essential employees of the city will not get paid from April 8th through May 2nd. All non-essential services will shut down at 4:30 on Friday afternoon, April 8th.
The Mayor went on to say, "we are greatly aware of the potential impact this will have on all of our employees. We are making every effort to find solutions prior to the April 8th deadline. As more information becomes available, we will make sure to share it as soon as possible."
