See the exact location on the Matawan Creek where the historic New Jersey shark attacks happened in 1916.

It is the legendary, infamous summer of 1916 that inspired the movie JAWS, and it happened right here in New Jersey.

Over a 12 day period, 4 people were killed and one severely injured by a shark (or sharks - the number is still disputed today) from Beach Haven on Long Beach Island, north to Spring Lake and the Matawan Creek. This video posted on YouTube by NJ.com shows the exact site where the shark attacked 2 boys and a young man.

Shark attacks in the North were unheard of at the time and the story quickly became national news. A man-eating shark along the Jersey Shore both terrorized and fascinated the nation, 100 years ago this month.
