It is with a heavy heart that we report that legendary singer Joe Cocker has died at age 70.

Cocker, an Academy and Grammy Award-winning singer perhaps best known for his cover of the Beatles' 'With a Little Help From My Friends,' passed away today (Dec. 22) after battling lung cancer.

"John Robert Cocker, known to family, friends, his community and fans around the world as Joe Cocker, passed away on December 22, 2014 after a hard fought battle with small cell lung cancer. Mr. Cocker was 70 years old," Sony Music said in a statement (via ITV).

"Joe Cocker was born 5/20/1944 in Sheffield, England where he lived until his early 20s. In 2007 he was awarded the OBE by the Queen of England," the statement continued. "His international success as a blues/rock singer began in 1964 and continues till this day. Joe created nearly 40 albums and toured extensively around the globe."

Cocker's cover of 'With a Little Help…' hit No. 1 in 1968, later gaining a new generation of followers as 'The Wonder Years' theme song. The gritty singer's 'Up Where We Belong' -- from 'Officer in a Gentleman' -- garnered him and his duet partner Jennifer Warnes both a Grammy and Oscar. Cocker was also known for his hits 'You Are So Beautiful' and 'Feelin' Alright.'

Cocker is survived by his wife of 27 years, his brother, his step-daughter and two grandchildren.

R.I.P., Joe Cocker.
