Growing up here at the Jersey Shore we had some creepy places that we always were a bit scared of as kids. There was a home in Toms River that was closed up and rumor had it someone had been mysteriously murdered there, which I think was so not the case, but we were scared to even walk by. There was a place in the woods, an old road in Barnegat that had creepy old homes, and a cemetery, which was rumored to be haunted. Of course, Leeds Point was always scary because the Jersey Devil was always running around and there may have been a bigfoot or two in the Pine Barrens as well.

In a recent article by Love Exploring, they highlighted the creepiest abandoned attractions in America, including New Jersey. "The USA is crammed full of museums designed to be a window into times gone by – but sometimes the country's fascinating abandoned buildings do a better job of bringing the past into focus."

According to Love Exploring, New Jersey's "creepiest abandoned location" is right next to the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island. "This famed hospital on Ellis Island opened in the 1900s, just after the turn of the century. It was in operation until the 1930s, before it was completely abandoned in 1954, and while open, the hospital treated many thousands of immigrants who arrived on Ellis Island ready for a new life. Today poignant images by French artist JR plaster the peeling walls, and a hard-hat tour allows visitors to explore the unrestored site, from the kitchens and the wards to the treatment rooms: tours are currently available daily."

I have been to Ellis Island, but I did not do the tour. I was visiting the Statue of Liberty and the ship that takes you to the Statue also will drop you off at Ellis Island to tour, but we didn't do Ellis Island maybe next time.
