It's my favorite time of year. It's awards season in Hollywood, and the studios are releasing their best projects of the year in the hope of being recognized. I'll be spending a ton of time over the holidays catching up on media screenings, but I can already tell you Concussion starring Will Smith and Joy starring Jennifer Lawrence (both based on true stories) will be hard to beat.

Concussion starring Will Smith (opens Christmas Day)

This film is a gripping and true account of one doctor's journey to shed light on the long term effects of concussions on football players. Brilliantly played by Smith, Concussion follows the story of Dr. Bennet Omalu, a forensic pathologist who took on the NFL (and won) in a quest to raise safety awareness of repeated head injuries on the football field. Even more astonishing than Smith's Golden Globe nominated portrayal is the real-life accounts of the famous players who battled life in the wake of brain trauma. This film is a must-see for every football fan, if for no other reason than to become educated about the dangers of the sport.

Joy starring Jennifer Lawrence (opens Christmas Day)

Some critics wrote that Lawrence was horribly miscast as suburban mother-turned inventor Joy Mangano, creator of items like the Miracle Mop and Huggable Hangers. But the story of Mangano's life is rich enough to rise above JLaw's performance. Joy pairs Lawrence once again with her Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle director David O'Russell, as well as former co-stars Robert DeNiro and Bradley Cooper. What I took away from Joy was a sense of family, albeit it dysfunctional, and a feeling of inspiration. Mangano launched a global empire off of some simple household inventions, even in the wake of familial sabotage. This film will ultimately leave you smiling, and also remind you why Lawrence and Cooper's chemistry remains lightening in a bottle.
