Taylor Swift Gets ‘Emotional’ About Fan’s Coming Out Story
Taylor Swift sent her love and praise to a fan who came out as gay using one of her songs.
A senior at the Christian college, George Fox University, used his school’s annual lip sync battle to come out to his classmates. “I listened to it and I danced around and cried and was overjoyed and thrilled,” Reid Arthur told Teen Vogue, who broke the story. “I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, this is incredible. I could come out during this.”
Arthur performed a show-stopping 5-minute performance of the 29-year-old pop star’s hit, “…Ready For It?” and “You Need To Calm Down.” During the lyric, “Cause shade never made anybody less gay,” his backup dancers tore off his coat to unveil a shirt with rainbow strings hanging from the sleeves, therefore coming out as gay. His performance earned him a standing ovation from his peers and first prize in the competition. He will be donating the $500 prize to an LGBTQ+ charity.
Swift saw the journalist, who wrote the article, tweet the story about Arthur and replied. “This just made me SO emotional,” Swift wrote. “@Reidoburrito95 I can’t tell you how honored I am that my song has been even a small part in your journey. You did the brave thing and stood up for your truth.”
