Spirit Airlines plans to extend its service to one Florida destination to include year-round flights.

According to the Palm Beach Post, Spirit plans to offer non-stop service from Palm Beach International Airport to Atlantic City International Airport through the summer.

Spirit's service from Atlantic City to Palm Beach is the only route Spirit offers using PBI.  It has traditionally provided the flights only in the colder months as a service to snowbirds heading to Florida.

Spirit thinks the PBI to ACY service could also be used by south Florida passengers interested in visiting the northeast in the summer and fall or by people attracted by Atlantic City's gaming market during those times of the year.

The one-a-day flights resumed on December 15, 2022, and almost 2,000 passengers used the service in December.

Palm Beach International Airport says that 3,815 passengers flew to Atlantic City in January, a 28% increase over the same month in 2022.

Laura Beebe, airport director of the Palm Beach International Airport, said expanding the number of nonstop flights is one of her top priorities, which includes extending service historically only flown during the traditional high season and adding frequencies to existing routes.

“We welcome the extension of nonstop service by Spirit Airlines from Atlantic City through the summer,” Beebe to the Palm Beach Post.

Non-stop Spirit flights to Atlantic City are offered on a year-round basis from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Spirit has also expanded into Miami International Airport.

It is unclear how the potential Jet Blue-Spirit merger will affect the PBI-ACY route should it be approved by regulators.

The companies expect to conclude the regulatory process and close the transaction no later than June 2024.
