South Jersey Man Killed by Falling Tape Measure
File this under 'wrong place, wrong time'. In a freak accident a New Jersey man was killed by an industrial tape measure that came falling out of the sky.
58-year old Gary Anderson, of Somerdale N.J., was delivering sheet rock to a residential condo/hotel construction site in Jersey City Monday when a one-pound tape measure fell off the belt of a worker 50 stories above. The item hit Anderson on the top of his head. He had reportedly just stopped to speak with another worker who was in a pickup truck.
Authorities tell ABC News the incident occurred shortly before 9 a.m. in the city's downtown area.
Anderson, who worked for the North Carolina-based company National Gypsum, was taken to a hospital, where he died less than an hour later.
Although a hard hat was found in Anderson's truck, the victim was not wearing it at the time of the accident, according to the police report.
