A friend of mine says that the incentive I'm giving to my son to score goals in soccer is bad parenting. I totally disagree.

My 8 year old son is a gifted soccer player, and has been the top scorer in his league every season he has played. He has been playing soccer twice a year since he was 5.

Last season he scored an all time high, with 30 goals in 11 games, winning the championship 2 seasons in a row.

One reason why he did so well, was the challenge I gave him that involved money.

I told my son that I will give him $1 for every goal he scores in a game. If he does NOT score any goals in a game, he pays ME $2. He would get paid the total amount at the end of the season.

My friend said, "that is horrible, and not a very good way to parent".

Well, it worked. He scored multiple times every game, and only didn't score in 1 game. At the end of the season, he still came out well ahead, with all the goals he scored.

What do YOU think? Great incentive to succeed, or bad parenting?
