Shock To No One: NJ Is State With Highest Property Taxes In 2022

It's expensive to live in New Jersey, the residents all know that. Now, thanks to a recent survey, everyone else knows just how much.

It sure wasn't a secret to us, the average Garden State resident, that to make a life here in Jersey is no easy feat. It almost feels like, compared to the majority of other states, New Jersey's pricey in almost every category. Heck, you basically have to pay a toll on every single major roadway you travel on.

If you want a decent life without having to break the bank, sad to say, Jersey's probably not for you. If you've been living under a rock your whole life and aren't really aware of just how expensive New Jersey is, let's just say that you could basically buy a mini mansion in Texas for what the average person making around $70,000 would be able to afford here in Jersey. Spoiler alert: it's basically a shack.

A new survey proves that, too. According to WalletHub.com, New Jersey comes in at number one on the list of states with highest property taxes. We're not talking about the top ten or even the top five. The Garden State takes the absolute number one spot on the list.

If you own a home here in the Garden State worth slightly over $215k, then you're likely paying almost $5500 in property taxes. Mind you, that's not even for a decent chunk of land. Your entire lot may be less than .3 acres and there's a good chance you're almost paying six thousand dollars in taxes. Wild, right?

Still, it makes sense when you think about the fact that there are so many people who live here in such a confined space. Jersey's a small state when it comes to its geographical size. So, the fact that the population easily exceeds more than some of the geographically bigger midwestern states pretty much sums up the answer to "why".

A little less than 30 cents of every $1 in property taxes charged in New Jersey support municipal services provided by cities, towns, townships, boroughs and villages. Statewide, the average municipal-only tax bill in 2021 was $2,725, but that varied widely from more than $13,000 in Tavistock to nothing in three townships. In addition to $9.22 billion in municipal purpose taxes, special taxing districts that in some places provide municipal services such as fire protection, garbage collection or economic development levied $323.8 million in 2021.
