Sam Smith Changes Pronouns to ‘They/Them’ After Coming Out As Non-Binary
Sam Smith now uses the gender-neutral pronouns they/them.
In a series of candid tweets posted on Friday (September 13), the "How Do You Sleep" singer confirmed they would like to be referred to as "they" and not "he" from this moment forward. Smith's announcement comes six months after they came out as non-binary while appearing on actress Jameela Jamil’s Weigh series.
At the time, Smith opened up about feeling "like a woman" sometimes, revealing there were instances where they even questioned if undergoing a sex change was the right choice for them. The 27-year-old pop star added that they used to hate being "feminine in many ways" but now they "flow somewhere between male and female."
Today, Smith's more confident than ever about officially switching their pronouns.
"Today is a good day so here goes. I’ve decided I am changing my pronouns to THEY/THEM after a lifetime of being at war with my gender I’ve decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out," they wrote.
"I’m so excited and privileged to be surrounded by people that support me in this decision but I’ve been very nervous about announcing this because I care too much about what people think but fuck it!" Smith continued.
They went on to acknowledge "there will be many mistakes and misgendering," but that they bope their preferred pronouns will be respected. "All I ask is you please please try," Smith wrote.
"P.s. I am at no stage just yet to eloquently speak at length about what it means to be non binary but I can’t wait for the day that I am," the Grammy winner added. "So for now I just want to be VISIBLE and open. If you have questions and are wondering what this all means I’ll try my best to explain."
