The face of the Miss America competition is evolving.  For the first time, a contestant chose to display her tattoos instead of running for the Dermablend.

Miss Kansas, Theresa Vail, is the first Miss America contestant ever to show off her ink.  Vail did so during the first round of preliminary competition Tuesday night at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, the sight of this weekend's pageant.

Vail told PressofAtlanticCity.com  the two tattoos inscribed on her torso are the Serenity Prayer and a military medical insignia from the Dental Corps. She is a sergeant and combat medic in the Army National Guard.

The new Miss America will be crowned Sunday.
