As more states ease stay-at-home requirements, ride-sharing company Lyft just released new health and safety requirements for riders that it hopes will prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Lyft says it is "working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to develop new policies, products, and education to help make sure everyone’s practicing healthy habits during the ride — and to help protect everyone in the car."

Requirements include:

  • Staying home if you have tested positive for COVID-19 or if you have any symptoms that are associated with COVID-19.
  • Drivers and passengers must wear face masks at all times.
  • Riders are asked to sanitize their hands before touching anything inside of a Lyft vehicle. Lyft also asks riders to not leave trash in vehicles.
  • Riders are asked to sit in the back seat of vehicles and to avoid using phone chargers.
  • Riders are asked to handle their own luggage.
  • Whenever possible, drivers and riders are asked to keep windows open to help air circulate through the vehicle.

In addition to these guidelines, Lyft has also temporarily suspended share rides.

Lyft also reminds riders that drivers are wearing masks, committing to keeping their cars clean, and taking other safety measures and that a "healthy tip or an enthusiastic 'thank you'" can go a long way.

Earlier this month, cnbc.com reported that Lyft rides were up 26% in May compared to April, but that year-to-year, rides were down 70%.
