In 2025, there are going to be a whole mess of kids named Liam, Olivia, and Emma in kindergarten classes in the Egg Harbor Township and Greater Egg Harbor school systems.

The Social Security Administration has released the top baby names for 2020 and New Jersey pretty closely matches the rest of the country when it comes to popular names for the little ones.

In New Jersey, the most popular boys names in 2020 were Liam, Noah, Lucas, Joseph (yay!), and Jacob. The two most popular boys names in the United States were also Liam and Noah,. Lucas was #8 in the country, but  Joseph and Jacob didn't make the Top 10 list nationwide.

For girls the most popular names were Olivia, Sophia, Emma, Mia, and Ava. Oliva and Emma were one and two on the national list, Sophia was #5, Mia was #8, and Ava was #3.

By the way, 50 years ago, the most popular names for boys in New Jersey were Michael, John, Robert, David, and James. The most popular girls names in 1970 were Jennifer, Lisa, Kimberly, Dawn, and Christina.

So, why are Liam and Olivia the most popular names in New Jersey today? I don't know, but I can only speculate (with tongue firmly in cheek) that Liam is because of Liam Neeson (" I do have are a very particular set of skills....". And then there's Liam Hemsworth, of course!

I can also only speculate that Olivia is popular because of.... Olivia Newton John (Let's Get Physical..."), Olivia Munn, Olivia Rodrigo, etc.
