14- and 17-year-olds Charged After Jumping From Stolen Car in Washington Township
Washington Township, N.J. — Two teenagers from Gloucester County are facing charges after police say they jumped from a moving stolen car and tried to outrun officers following an early Monday morning traffic stop in Washington Township.
According to the Washington Township Police Department, one of its officers spotted a silver Hyundai racing southbound on Route 42 around 1 AM.
As the Hyundai swung into the Raising Cane's parking lot on the Black Horse Pike, the officer initiated a traffic stop. Both occupants immediately jumped from the moving vehicle and sprinted into nearby woods. The still-moving Hyundai was safely stopped while other officers established a perimeter.
Their getaway didn't last long. The pair soon ran into officers waiting on Ganttown Road, where they surrendered.
Stolen and Prepped for It
Authorities said the Hyundai had been stolen overnight from Glassboro. The driver's side door handle had been removed, the ignition had been popped, and a long flathead screwdriver, a tool commonly used to steal vehicles, was found inside.
Charges Filed
The 14-year-old from Clayton and the 17-year-old from Glassboro were each charged with receiving stolen property and resisting arrest by flight. Both were released to their guardians pending court proceedings.
The public is reminded that charges are accusations and all persons are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
