Police Officers Save Suicidal Man Near Atlantic City, NJ, Boardwalk
A potentially tragic situation involving a suicidal man near the Atlantic City Boardwalk Thursday night ended with no one being hurt.
At around 11:30, Atlantic City police officers were called to the 100 block of South Missouri Avenue for a report of a man who was threatening to hurt himself.
At the scene, officers found a 29-year-old man from Dayton, OH, on the sidewalk near the boardwalk and they started to speak to him.
The male was visibly distressed and was holding a razor blade to his neck and threatening to kill himself. Sergeant Daniel Arra, a member of the Atlantic City Police Department’s Crisis Negotiation Team, responded to the scene and established dialogue with the male.
Police say as Sgt. Arra attempted to keep the man calm, "he demanded the officers shoot him and began walking towards the officers refusing their orders to stop."
Another officer then shot the man with a Taser, which incapacitated him, and he was disarmed.
The man was ultimately unharmed and taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center-City Division for evaluation and treatment.
