Ocean County, NJ, Prosecutor: Man Shoots Himself After Firing Gun at Police Officer
An Ocean County man was last reported to be in critical condition after he allegedly fired a gun at a police officer before shooting himself in the head.
Authorities say the scene unfolded around 8:40 Monday morning when the Brick Township Police Department received a 9-1-1 call from a woman who said she had been notified by her doorbell camera that her ex-husband, 28-year-old Corey Johnson of Brick, had broken into her home on Judy Court.
An investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office revealed that upon receiving that notification, the woman left work and was on the phone with a 9-1-1 dispatcher when she arrived at the parking lot of her home.
Johnson, who had since exited the residence, pulled his motor vehicle in front of the female’s vehicle, thereby blocking her in.
A Brick Township Police Officer arrived and as he exited his patrol vehicle, Johnson got out of his and allegedly fired one shot in the direction of the officer, hitting the windshield.
It was initially reported that the officer was not hurt, however, a follow-up press release indicated he suffered minor injuries when his arm was cut by pieces of glass.
Immediately after firing the weapon at the Officer, Johnson turned the gun on himself and shot himself in the head.
Johnson was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune where he was last reported to be in critical condition.
The matter remains an active and ongoing investigation under the direction of the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, the Brick Township Police Department, and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office.
