Beloved Philadelphia Television Legend Passes Away At Age 89
This one really hurts.
Philadelphia Television legend, Joe Pellegrino has passed away at age 89.
We became very good friends over the last more than 20 years and Joe was an avid participant in our annual “Hurley in the Morning” Charity Golf Open.
Joe played as recently as during our 2023 event and I was so looking forward to Joe being with us this year on Thursday, June 20, 2024.
Joe’s golf game at the age of 88 last year was extraordinary. In the summer heat, Joe effortlessly negotiated the heat and 18 holes of golf.
Pellegrino, along with Larry Kane, Jim O’Brien and other greats helped to launch Action News WPVI Channel 6 in the 1970’s and became # 1 in the Delaware Valley.
Joe Pellegrino was both the sports director and an on-air news anchor.
Joe was most well known for his television work, but, he also did quality radio broadcasting work, too.
Joe Pellegrino was a kind, very good man … who was very humble, despite his stardom.
Joe Pellegrino left Action News for Detroit and later returned to Philadelphia for a successful stint at CBS Channel 10.
Joe enjoyed a 35-year iconic broadcasting career and was a member of the Philadelphia Sports Writer’s Association.
I will miss Joe Pellegrino.
Joe Pellegrino represents a life very well lived.
