Officials in Cape May County say one person was killed in a single-vehicle crash on Route 47 Monday night.

  • The accident happened around 7:30 in the 800 block of Route 47 in South Dennis
  • Dennis Twp. firefighters were conducting a training exercise at their firehouse when the call was received
  • First responders were at the scene in just three minutes

Arriving firefighters found an overturned vehicle with its driver trapped inside. Crews freed the driver who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Route 47 remained closed in both directions for more than four hours as authorities worked to clear the crash. The busy highway reopened just before midnight.

The identity of the person killed in the accident was not included in a social media post from the Dennis Volunteer Fire Company.

In addition to the Dennis and Ocean View Fire Companies, Inspira EMS, the Middle Township Ambulance Squad, AtlantiCare Paramedics, New Jersey State Police, Middle Township Fire Police units from Goshen Fire, Green Creek Fire, and Rio Grande Fire, and the New Jersey Department of Transportation responded to the scene.

The accident remains under investigation by state police.
