For the first 200 years of United States history, medical care was a community endeavor. Many hospitals, sanitariums, primary care physician offices, and health specialists were supported by the local communities.

It wasn't until the 20th century that the Federal and State governments began to give consistent financial support for medical care, and only in the last 40 years have we seen the proliferation of corporate health organizations operating large networks.

In South Jersey, one of the medical centers that still has ties to community-supported health care is Shore Medical Center in Somers Point. Back in 1940, the original Atlantic Shores Hospital and Sanitarium was purchased by local community members who renamed the facility Shore Memorial Hospital. Thanks to support from donors and fundraising, the facility underwent major expansion and upgrades from 1954-1978.

Renamed Shore Medical Center in 2011 after the opening of a new 138,000-square-foot surgical pavilion, the health care facility continues to be a centerpiece of Somers Point and South Jersey.  Many local business owners and community leaders still support and are involved with the popular regional hospital.

Local Business Leader to be honored for almost four decades of service for South Jersey

In a press release, Shore Medical Center announced they will be honoring Board of Trustees Chairman David Beyel Sr. at the “A Cause to Celebrate” Gala on Friday, November 6th at the Golden Nugget Casino Hotel in Atlantic City.

Beyel first joined the Properties Board for Shore Memorial Hospital in 1987, later serving on the Nursing Home Board, and then joining the Hospital Board of Trustees in 1992.

Shore Medical Center President and CEO David R. Hughes gave the following statement about the upcoming A Cause for Celebration Gala honoring Beyel Sr. on Friday, November 6th:

“I have tremendous appreciation for David's guidance, generosity, and the personal interest he takes in Shore Medical Center - His volunteerism is remarkable. When you add up the hours he has devoted to this hospital over the years, it's the equivalent of working 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for an entire year. That speaks volumes about the kind of person he is and how much Shore means to him."

Dave Beyel Sr. is the third generation owner and operator of the family-owned Boulevard Super Liquors in Marmora. The South Jersey Landmark sits at the foot of the Ocean City 34th Street Bridge on Roosevelt Boulevard, and the Beyel family is beloved for their generosity in the community and fundraising efforts for local causes. Today, Beyel Sr. operates Boulevard Super Liquors alongside his son, Dave Jr.
