Ocean City Beach Cleared Over Possible Explosive

An OCNJ Local video from Corson's Inlet State Park on the southern end of Ocean City on Monday afternoon showed what appeared to be an explosive lying on the beach next to some netting.

Possible Explosive Seen on Ocean City Beach

NJ State Park Police cleared the beach in Ocean City's Corson's Inlet State Park Monday afternoon at about 4 pm after the report of a potential explosive that had washed up.

The report, in a video from OCNJ Local, showed what appeared to be an explosive on the sand. You can watch the video at the bottom of this article.

It was not possible to tell if it had been detonated.

Dominic Dougterty of OCNJ Local reported that State Park Police were clearing all beachgoers away from the scene as they investigated.

"As I was walking back to the path to get to my car, the officer asked me and everyone else on the beach to leave immediately. It looks like that situation with the explosive is a little more concerning than originally thought."

There has been no official word from authorities yet about any possible explosive found on Corson's Inlet Beach Monday afternoon.

While startling to some, the discovery of old munitions on Jersey shore beaches or just offshore is not all that unusual. The military has said it dumped large quantities of munitions overboard at the end of both World Wars as the conflicts were ending.

In 2007, more than 1,000 pieces of World War I and World War II-era munitions were discovered on the beaches of Long Beach Island after they were unwittingly sucked up by dredges and pumped ashore as part of a massive beach replenishment project.
