Municipalities throughout our area celebrated National Night Out by hosting great events that featured games, music, fire trucks, demonstrations, and police- a lot of police.

The event is meant to introduce the public to the local police departments and allow residents to meet those who serve and protect.

National Night Out started as a police event, but through the years, it has grown to include all first responders.

Most municipalities celebrate this event on the first Tuesday of every August.

The Safest Place to Be

With the massive police presence at these events, it takes a special kind of stupidity, to choose this as a time to start trouble.

But that's exactly what happened at Veterans Memorial Park in  Egg Harbor Township.

It was a great event.  The event was well-attended and everyone was having a good time enjoying the weather, watching demonstrations, and just having a good time.

A Fight Breaks Out

Then, just before the fireworks, police say a fight broke out.  When the dust settled 20-year-old Latairah Abdul-Haqq of Atlantic City and two 17-year-old girls from Galloway and Mays Landing left the event in handcuffs.

Police say the three were charged with disorderly conduct and simple assault.

Only One Fight

Despite rumors posted online, police say there was only one fight, and the crowd who attended, enjoyed an evening of fun.

Witnesses who were at the event, praised the police for organizing the event, saying, "It was a good time.  It was a fun night."
