On the evening of October 21, Ventnor police responded to a call about someone possibly trying to break into the Way of Life Church.
Officers who responded to the call at the church, which is located in Ventnor at 5000 Ventnor Avenue, observed a male suspect fleeing the scene on foot.
Police pursued the suspect as he climbed on the roof of a nearby house.
The pursuit continued as the suspect jumped onto a second roof, where officers attempted without success to get him to comply with their commands.
Officer Michael Newell Jr. began negotiating with the suspect and eventually talked the man into coming down from the roof, and he was taken into custody without further resistance.
Police identified the suspect as a 31-year-old Manchester resident, Christopher J. Camargo.
Camargo was charged on summons with Criminal Attempt Burglary, Criminal Mischief, and Resisting Arrest.
During the investigation, police discovered Camargo had unrelated active warrants, and is now being held in the Atlantic County Justice Facility in Mays Landing.
Ventnor Police Chief Joseph Fussner praised the neighbor who originally called in the crime after noticing the man, and damage to the side door of the church.
He reminds us that if something looks suspicious, you should always follow your instincts and call the police.
Chief Fussner also credited Officer Newell for being able to talk the suspect into giving up and avoiding possible injury.
