Absecon Lighthouse Awarded Grant for Restoration Project
The Absecon Lighthouse, located in Atlantic City at Pacific and Rhode Island Avenues is the tallest lighthouse in New Jersey and the third tallest masonry lighthouse in the country.
People from all over, visit the lighthouse and ascend the 228 steps to the top, and are afforded a magnificent view. of the city.
The lighthouse is also the site of many events, including weddings, classes, and more. It's a beautiful monument right in our backyard.
The Absecon Lighthouse was built in 1855.
The cost of constructing the lighthouse at that time was a whopping $52,436.62.
The land the lighthouse is built on was transferred to the federal government from The Camden and Atlantic Land Co. for $520.
Like any other structure, especially those built near the ocean, there comes a time when renovations are necessary.
The Absecon Lighthouse has been dealing with moisture problems.
According to the Inlet Public/Private Association, the organization that manages the lighthouse, there is concern that the moisture is damaging the tower's brick and cast-iron infrastructure.
Last year, an engineering study determined the causes of the moisture and provided remediation recommendations.
The organization announced the lighthouse has been awarded a $750,000 grant as part of the government's America’s Treasures Grant.
According to the NPS, The America's Treasures Grant was established in 1998 to celebrate America's premiere cultural resources in the new millennium.
While the grant will not cover the complete cost of the work that's needed, it is a much-needed infusion of cash.
