Let me start by saying this is not an attack on senior citizens since at 68 years old I am well in that age group.  Now I will continue.

I have a way for police departments and Jersey Shore towns to make a lot of money by enforcing a law that I would imagine is rarely enforced.  I will admit to not knowing the parameters of this law as I spent a few minutes on the New Jersey Motor Vehicle website but could not find the information I wanted.

In Ocean County there are many and I mean many drivers who display a handicapped placard while driving and think nothing of it.  The problem is they are breaking the law regarding things that limit your vision while driving.  Right on the placard you receive it says clearly Remove before driving, it’s the law!  My guess is most of those who display these while driving have no idea they are indeed violating the law.  I know people who during a motor vehicle stop were either issued a warning or summons for having a large air freshener hanging from their rear view mirror…same place as the handicapped placard.

In full discloser I have one of these and do use it from time to time.  Having five surgeries on my back and hips and suffering from neuropathy in my left foot walking at times is a challenge.  I do not abuse this privilege and if there is a regular spot easily available I will often park there.

I use mine when parking only!

Obviously I am being somewhat sarcastic and not suggesting police establish a task force in going after those who display handicapped placards while driving. However it is a law that is violated every day in every town so a little education won’t hurt.
