Everything You Need to Know About E-Bike Rules in New Jersey 2025
Thinking about zipping around New Jersey on an electric bike? But before you hit the road, it’s worth knowing the rules, because not all e-bikes are treated the same here in the Garden State.
Please, please stay safe on these, we've been hearing more and more accidents with E-bikes. Know the rules before you take off.
E-bikes in New Jersey are sorted into three classes, and each one comes with its own set of guidelines.
The E-Bike Classes Explained
Class 1 & Class 2: The Easy Riders
Speed: Tops out under 20 mph.
Motor: Less than 750 watts.
Requirements: No license, registration, or insurance needed.
Helmet: Required if you’re under 17.
These are the most “bike-like” of the bunch. If you can ride a regular bicycle, you’ll feel right at home. PERSONALLY, I would always wear a helmet, always.
Class 3: The Speedsters
Speed: Between 20 and 28 mph.
Requirements: A valid driver’s license + registration with the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission.
Age Limit: You must be at least 15 years old.
This class is faster and treated more like a motorized bicycle, so the state puts stricter rules on it. For more information about E-bikes in New Jersey, CLICK HERE.
General Rules for Riding in New Jersey
No matter what class of e-bike you ride, here are the basics you need to know:
Stick to the Road & Bike Paths: You can ride on the street and most bike paths, but always yield to pedestrians. Some trails may ban e-bikes, so check before heading out.
Sidewalks? Nope. E-bikes aren’t meant for sidewalks unless a town specifically says otherwise.
Follow the Rules of the Road: Stop at stop signs, obey traffic signals, and ride in the same direction as cars.
Local Laws Vary: Some towns and counties have their own add-on restrictions, so keep an eye out for local rules.
Helmet Up: Especially important for younger riders (and a good idea for everyone).
Where Can You Ride?
Across New Jersey, low-speed e-bikes can go wherever regular bicycles are allowed — from your neighborhood streets to many local bike paths. Just remember: respect pedestrians, watch your speed, and double-check local ordinances before planning a big ride.
