New ShopRite in Atlantic City NJ Sets Groundbreaking Date

It's actually happening. Atlantic City, which has been dubbed a 'food desert' over its lack of grocery stores and access to healthy foods, will be breaking ground on the construction of a new ShopRite next month.

On the heels of the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority's approval of the project, Mayor Marty Small confirmed this week that November 18th will be a groundbreaking day at 1801 Baltic Avenue in Atlantic City, where the ShopRite will be built.

Small made the announcement during a mayoral debate at Stockton University's A.C. campus, reports Press of Atlantic City.

The CRDA is reportedly putting up $18.5 million dollars to build the supermarket, which will be located on Baltic Ave. between N. Ohio and N. Indiana Ave. not far from the Atlantic City Convention Center and Tanger Outlets.

The piece of land where ShopRite will go is currently a parking lot. The store will reportedly occupy 44,000 square feet and offer more than 220 parking spots for shoppers.

It will cost Village Supermarket, Inc., the parent company of the Atlantic City ShopRite just $1 a year to operate the store under a recent agreement.

Traffic in the area of the construction of the new ShopRite is likely to be compromised over the coming weeks, we'll keep you posted of any detours.
