Eagles WR Marquise Goodwin opts out of 2020 season

Due to concerns surrounding COVID-19, several NFL players informed their respective teams of their decision to opt out of the 2020 NFL season on Tuesday. Add Eagles' wide receiver Marquise Goodwin to the growing list.

Goodwin and his wife, Morgan Goodwin-Snow, welcomed their first child into the world in February. Prior to the birth of their daughter, the couple endured a long-standing bout with tragedy due to pregnancy complications.

The speedy pass-catcher was acquired on the final day of draft weekend for a swap of sixth-round picks with the San Francisco 49ers. Shortly after the trade was finalized, the Eagles and Goodwin agreed on a one-year contract restructure worth $1.35 million in 2020.

Though far from a lock to make the roster, Goodwin's experience, production, and game-changing speed was expected to potentially add another layer to the new-look Eagles' offense. Adding the electrifying 29-year-old for minimal compensation was one of the team's more underrated offseason additions. It would have been interesting to monitor his chemistry with Carson Wentz throughout the summer.

With Goodwin out of the picture, the next in line to assume his role as a prominent depth piece and steady field-stretcher will presumably be rookies John Hightower and Quez Watkins.

Barring another unforeseen announcement, the roster currently stands at 81 players. The team has until August 16 to reach the league-mandated 80-man limit.
