Down To One: Buena’s Landisville NJ Fire Department Officially Disbanded
It wasn't clear whether or not Buena would choose to keep both of their fire departments running after accusations of numerous safety issues were brought against the volunteer department in Landisville.
Now, it seems we have an answer. Buena's borough has made the decision to officially abolish Fire District Number 1. The decision came Monday when the council voted to transfer all responsibilities, funds, and property to district number two, the Minotola Fire Company. The whole mess started when the borough's Director of Public Safety requested information from both companies ensuring they were up to date with safety courses, equipment inspections, etc.
When Councilman Joseph D’Alessandro III asked for the information, he wasn't met with any hesitation or retaliation from the Minotola Fire Company. According to TheDailyJournal.com, the folks from District 2 (Minotola) got back to him in two days time, proving that they were in compliance with all requirements and protocols. District One, Landisville, on the other hand, had several areas in which they needed to improve. That news came directly from the horse's mouth as Landisville members of the volunteer-based department had criticism for how it was being ran.
During District 1's initial 90-day suspension, the folks in charge of that department were given time to get their ducks in a row. There were only two firefighters not accounted for who agreed to step down so the district could be cleared to reopen, however it wasn't to be. Now, the Minotola Fire Company will extend their coverage to include the borough in its entirety.
As you can imagine, many members of the Landisville company do not feel like the department was given a fair shot to redeem itself, but it's a mute point now since the gavel's been lowered on the matter.
