The state Attorney General filed a complaint Monday alleging that an Ocean County pediatrician who gave hundreds of children ineffective vaccinations did so knowingly.

New Jersey Attorney General Christopher S. Porrino filed a complaint with the state Board of Medical Examiners alleging Dr. Michael Bleiman of Southern Ocean Pediatrics and Family Medicine in Manahawkin dispensed possibly faulty vaccines at his practice between November 2014 and July 28, 2016.

In the complaint, the doctor is accused of fraud, gross negligence and misconduct in administering child vaccinations, according to the Press of Atlantic City.

According to the report from the NJ. Health Department, the 900 affected children were vaccinated at Southern Ocean Pediatrics and Family Medicine in Manahawkin, through Vaccines for Children, a federally funded, state-operated program that helps provide vaccines to children whose parents or guardians may not be able to afford them. The program provides 1.6 million free or low-cost vaccines to eligible low-income children in New Jersey.

The Press of Atlantic City reports that the medical facility was found to have 280 doses of vaccine that were stored at an incorrect temperature during an inspection in late July.

Inspectors quarantined the vaccines at the Manahawkin practice and told Bleiman not to use them until they were proved effective, authorities said. The state alleges he gave patients the vaccines anyway.

Not all children who received the compromised vaccinations will need to be re-vaccinated. Children should be able to take a blood test to see if the vaccinations were effective. The compromised vaccines are not thought to be otherwise dangerous to the children.

The attorney General's complaint asks for the possible revocation or suspension of Bleiman's medical license after a hearing, as well as civil penalties, fees and restitution.

The Department of Health said families can call the NJ Health Hotline at 866-448-2432 with questions about these vaccinations.
