Brigantine Police are being thanked by a homeless Marine Corps veteran they encountered while out on patrol recently.

The veteran sent a Facebook message to Brigantine Police explaining that Officers Newcomer and Suralik had stopped to check on him, then realized that the vet was sleeping in his car while waiting for a job interview the next morning, left and returned a short time later to bring the man gas, water and snacks to help him through the night.

The police officers also brought a letter thanking the man for his service in the Marine Corps.

The down-on-his-luck vet had a deeply emotional reaction to their good deed.

In a time of my life where I'm finding it hard to keep pushing forward, their acts of kindness and compassion not only brought tears to my eyes, but showed me that it is worth it to keep going. I have lost everything I love, but after that I have found the little light I needed to remind myself that I can make it through.

What a great story! Read the entire post from the Marine Corps veteran from Brigantine Police Facebook page below...

"This message was sent in to us via Facebook today and we couldn’t be more proud of Officers Newcomer and Suralik for going above and beyond for this individual. Amazing job Officers - this is a very inspirational story that shows the true meaning of ‘service before self.’ And thank you to the person who shared this outstanding story. This one is worth the read, we promise.....

“Hello. I am writing on behalf of 2 amazing officers of yours, who went above and beyond their duties to help me, during a really tough time in my life right now being homeless. Tonight, Officer Newcomer had pulled up on me trying to sleep in my car before an interview tomorrow. After doing her due diligence to ensure I wasn't up to no good, she drove off. Little did I know she did a little research on me and saw that I served in the Marine Corps. About 20 minutes later, her and another young Officer who I unfortunately didn't catch his name, pulled back up. They came with a few gallons of gas for me knowing I was on E, and also some water and a few snacks, with a letter thanking me for my service. In a time of my life where I'm finding it hard to keep pushing forward, their acts of kindness and compassion not only brought tears to my eyes, but showed me that it is worth it to keep going. I have lost everything I love, but after that I have found the little light I needed to remind myself that I can make it through. I can not thank these officers enough, but the least I could do is write to your Department so that they're at least recognized in some way. it meant the world to me and I have a huge amount of respect for the Brigantine Police Dept now more than ever. Y'all are doing it right, thanks again!”
