The Atlantic Shore 13-year-old baseball team will play in this year's Babe Ruth World Series. The South Jersey team is made up of players from Northfield, Somers Point, Ocean City, Upper Township, Brigantine, and Ventnor.

Atlantic Shore earned the right to play in the national tournament by going undefeated in both the state and regional tournaments. They advanced Tuesday by picking up an 8-0 win over Mifflin County, Pa. in the championship game of the Babe Ruth Mid-Atlantic Regional played in Altoona, Pa.

Longtime Atlantic Shore coach and ESPN 97.3 radio host Mike Gill will lead his team to the Babe Ruth World Series being held in Jamestown, New York Aug. 14-21.

"I am very proud of this team's effort, Gill told the Press of Atlantic City. " We worked and just kept getting better and better. Pitching was outstanding all tournament, and the bats came alive at the right time. Total team effort. All 14 guys worked hard to get this done."

Atlantic Shore was lead Tuesday by Matt Wagner, who scored two runs and hit a solo home run.  Aidan Ralph earned the win for Atlantic Shore, pitching 6 2/3 innings with two strikeouts before being pulled because of the pitch-count rule.

Atlantic Shore won the Southern New Jersey title on July 13.

The Babe Ruth World Series is made up of two 5-team pools. Three teams from each group advance to the single-elimination section of the tournament.

Now the team, and their families, and the Atlantic Shore Baseball league will hold fund-raising events to help finance the team's week-long stay and transportation costs to the southwest corner of New York state.
