Wildlife officials in New Jersey have pulled a medium sized alligator from a local river, now authorities have to figure out where the creature originated from.

It took most of Wednesday to wrangle the five foot, 40 pound reptile spotted in the Passaic River in Elmwood, reports 6abc.com. The river is a popular summer spot for fishing and swimming.

Officials say the gator was likely a pet that was dumped in the river illegally.

Sharks, man-of-war jellyfish, alligators? What's next? Is Godzilla going to wash up on the Jersey shore?
