Shoppers at the Egg Harbor Township ShopRite were forced to leave full carts of groceries and evacuate Sunday when a fire broke out in the back of the store a little before 2p.m. Sunday.

Black smoke and flames could be seen rising about the store in the English Creek Shopping Center at English Creek Avenue and the Black Horse Pike.

Fire departments from Egg Harbor Township and Northfield responded to the alarm getting the blaze under control by 3p.m., but remaining on the scene after 5p.m., according to the Press of Atlantic City.

Cardiff Volunteer Fire Company Steven Sear said, “The fire was contained to the roof, and there is water damage to a storage area."

No one was injured. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, Sear said. The store remained closed Sunday night.
