We all know someone who’s a germaphobe, and constantly gets made fun of for it. However, what if a lot of the things they worry about are actually true? What if there actually are millions of germs living on every surface?

In actuality, there are. Millions of germs live on virtually all surfaces that we touch, especially in public areas. To  be clear, not all germs make us sick, but it never hurts to keep things clean.  For instance, do you know how often to clean out your refrigerator, how about your sheets?  We have an easy guide.

  • 1

Sheets and bedding: once a week.

It is a good idea to wash your pillowcases and sheets at least once a week to avoid transferring bacteria, oils and other impurities from your pillow to your face as you sleep.

  • 2

Bath and hand towels: after three uses

Many people think bath towels are clean because we use them to dry off after we’ve just scrubbed down, but these towels accumulate millions of dead skin cells, and other germs.

  • 3

    Makeup brushes: regularly

Regular cleaning kills bacteria, and also helps your brushes last longer and provides you with the best makeup application. You can wash makeup brushes by hand or put them in the dishwasher.

    Trash can: once a week

Your trash can is likely covered in more germs and bacteria than you can even imagine, so it’s a good idea wash your hands after touching it, and clean it with bleach or spray it down with disinfectant spray at least once a week.

This refers to things like doorknobs, light switches, your laptop, your smartphone, and all of that kind of stuff.

    Fridge: once a week

There is always that one item stuck in the back of the fridge that almost becomes unrecognizable. Also, leaving contaminated food in the fridge can spread listeria, a serious infection that has been linked to things like meningitis, miscarriages and death. Take the time to throw out old food and wipe down the shelves once a week.
