A woman has reportedly given birth inside the bathroom of a Subway sandwich shop, where she left then left the newborn in a toilet and fled.

The incident, as reported by ABC 7, happened at a Subway location in West Covina, California. Patrons and employees told police they heard screams coming from the bathroom before a woman walked out bleeding. She was then followed by the sounds of a crying baby.

Workers entered the bathroom to find an umbilical cord leading into the toilet where a male infant was discovered, partially under water.

A 911 dispatcher talked an employee through the process of safeguarding the child.

The baby was transported to Queen of the Valley Medical Center in critical condition.

As for the newborn's mother, 38-year old Mary Grace Trinidad, police followed the trail of blood out to the back of the Subway and found her at a nearby at Pep Boys. She is reportedly homeless.

Trinidad was also taken to the hospital for treatment. Authorities have charged her with attempted murder and child abandonment.
