Usually, the iPhone's auto correct feature is a nuisance. You are constantly having to fight this feature in order to write what you are really trying to type. However, today my friends, my iPhone introduced me to the word of words. A word I had to look up because there was no way, in my mind, that the word was real. It was not the amount of letters the word contained, but the layout of the word. It seemed too ridiculous to be real. The word I am speaking of, is a literary genre. One that you have probably never heard of and do not see above the bookshelves at Barnes and Noble or your local library.

No, I did not just make up this word. According to Merriam-Webster, bildungsroman is: a novel about the moral and psychological growth of the main character. It is of German origin. Bildung, meaning education, and roman, meaning novel. How would you pronounce such a word?

It was coined back in 1819 by Karl Morgenstern, but was popularized in 1906 by Wilhelm Dilthey. Morgenstern was a German philologist and Dilthey was a German sociologist, historian, philosopher, and psychologist.

If you want to over simplify the word, it refers to a coming of age story. Use it in a sentence today! You will most definitely impress your friends.
