The Strangest Town Name in South Jersey
There is a reason behind every town name in New Jersey. Some towns are named after a river, lake, ocean, historical figure or settler. Some names are stranger than others.
New Jersey has their fair share of some really weird names. Have you ever driven through Ho- Ho Kus or Loveladies?
Yes, there really is a town called Buttzville in northern part of the state. We used to drive through this town when visiting family in Pennsylvania. My boys would always yell, "Welcome to Buttzville, buttheads!" Of course this line would be followed by ten minutes of insane laughter. Nice, I know. We would always have to stop at Hot Dog Johnny's, a iconic tourist attraction in the one and only Buttzville!
Closer to home, one of the strangest towns in South Jersey has to be Bargaintown. According to Wikipedia, Bargaintown, is an independent community located within Egg Harbor Township.
According to the ebook, Early History of Atlantic County, by Laura Lavinia and Thomas Willis, Bargaintown was the center of activities in Egg Harbor Township. A local developer bought land hoping the town would grow and prosper. When the town did not develop as hoped, lots were sold cheaply, consequently, the name Bargaintown was born.
