Take your yoga practice to new heights with aerial yoga.  Whether you are a newbie or have been practicing yoga for years, this could be a new fitness routine for you! Check out the video of Aerial Yoga at Forza Fitness in Sea Isle.

Aerial Yoga is practiced by going  in a silky sling-like hammock which is suspended from the ceiling. You maneuver the hammock so that you can hold poses such as headstands or do more advanced tricks like back-flips inside of it! Your hammock can also be used as a suspension trainer and support your palms for tricep dips or to support your feet during exercises like push ups.

There are many benefits that come with practicing this type of yoga as well. For one thing, aerial yoga is a great ab workout. Some other big advantages to this yoga practice is that it’s zero-impact and it is a great cardio workout at the same time.

Aerial yoga will also make your mat poses easier to master. Learning new poses is thrilling and you’ll flip at the thrill of it, and the fun factor will keep you coming back for more. The best part is that you can practice at any skill level and you’ll walk away from your lesson feeling peaceful and zen.

Below are some tips and things you should know before attending your first aerial yoga class.

Surprising Benefits of Salt Water

1

Don’t Wear Jewelry or Lotion During Your Practice

In order to keep the hammocks sturdy and to avoid getting snagged or tearing the hammocks, avoid wearing lotion or other body cremes that may make it difficult to grasp onto the slings. Also refrain from wearing jewelry such as protruding piercings or watches that could tear or rip the hammock. It is also a good idea to trim your fingernails and toenails before your practice!

2

Avoid Drinking Soft Drinks Before Your Flight

Drink water before class and eat light and nourishing foods such as bananas and oatmeal along with something like a calming cup of ginger tea about an hour before your class. Since you’ll be flipping upside down it is best to avoid alcohol or any soft drinks such as soda that can cause you to feel nauseous.

3

If You Have Motion Sickness or Have Had Surgery Recently This Yoga Practice Might Not Be For You

If you have had a recent head injury or surgery, have a tendency of fainting or extreme fatigue, or have inner ear conditions that impact your balance – aerial yoga may not be the type of yoga for you. You should also not practice this yoga if you are past the first trimester in your pregnancy unless you’ve been cleared by a doctor or the class is specifically tailored for pregnancy. It is also best not to do this type of yoga practice of having botox within the past 24 hours.

4

Aerial Yoga Improves Flexibility and Helps Reduce Back Pain

The flying and flipping that you do during your aerial yoga practice helps improve your circulatory system.

5

Wear Fitted Clothing

Wear fitted clothing to your lesson that covers the backs of your knees and covers your armpits to prevent chafing and so that lose and excess material doesn’t get caught or snagged on the hammock.
