Doctors were prepared to tell a South Jersey woman's family that it was time to consider taking her off of life support.  Not only did the woman wake up, she also lived to tell her out of body experience.

Joan Wensel of Avalon was 'brain dead' according to Doctors.  Her husband had found her lying face down on the floor in their home.  Her face was blue and she was unconscious.  EMT's continued to give her CPR as they  drove her to Cape Regional Medical Center.  She was later transferred to Penn showing hardly any signs of life.

Right before the family made the tough decision to pull the plug, the unthinkable happened, Joan woke up! The most interesting part about this story is what Joan was seeing while she was fighting for her life.  According to the Press of Atlantic City, Joan saw four tall figures in white gowns whose faces she could not see guided her down a hallway toward a bright light.  When she looked up, she saw broad shoulders and a sword. She recognized the backlit figure as St. Michael, defender against evil for whom her oldest son is named.

“He must have told them it wasn’t my time,” she said.

A woman, whom Joan said reminded her of a nursing school teacher from 20 years ago, told her, “They can’t do anything more for you here.”

She instructed Joan to lie down and follow the angels’ advice: Rest and recuperate.

Joan then layed back and saw tropical fish above her.  She was in the water and snorkeling at her favorite vacation spot.  The snorkel was helping her breath, but in reality, the breathing tube was what was keeping her alive.  She then miraculously woke up.

Six months after she was given up for dead, Joan Wensel is grateful for her life but troubled by a question to which there is no answer. “As a nurse,” she said, “I wonder how many people we’ve pulled the plug on. I had no outward sign of brain waves, but I was in there.”
