Severe thunderstorms tore through Cape May County Tuesday afternoon, downing trees, knocking out power, damaging homes and flipping a plane over at Cape May Airport.

The storm caused the weather service to issue a tornado warning for Cape May County. Although there was no official confirmation of a tornado, some locals took to social media to say they were affected by one or more twisters.

Wind gusts to 80 mph caused power outages to more than 37,000 utility customers around the county after the storm. The Atlantic City Electric power outage map estimates that some 13,000 customers remain without power this morning.

The hardest-hit areas were Lower and Middle Townships in the south end of the county, the utility said.

The storm tore the roof off of the public works building in Wildwood.
