Most of us enjoy nice hot morning cup of coffee but it would not be a bad idea to have a cup of tea every now and then. Tea has been used for medicinal purposes for thousands of years and has so many positive health benefits.  Here are just a few.

But first, what is the difference between loose leaf tea and pre-packaged tea bags? Pre-packaged tea bags are often composed of finely broken down tea leaves and packaged into very tightly packed bags. When the tea is so finely broken down, the leaves often lose their essential oils and aromas, and are even further constricted from by their packaging. Loose leaf tea, however, consists of full tea leaves in bags that are much looser than regular tea-bags. The larger bag allows the tea leaves to “breathe,” if you will, and the full, unbroken tea leaves still obtain their essential oils and aromas, allowing for a unique tea experience.  Here are three of the most popular types of teas and their benefits.

 

  • Black Tea

    Black Tea is probably one of the most well known of tea products, with many different subtypes falling under it such as Earl Grey and English Breakfast. Black tea can often be a substitute for coffee, but although it produces an energizing effect, it doesn’t increase stress-hormone levels. This type is also known for its antibacterial and antiviral components, giving off antioxidants. Black tea is calorie-free, gluten-free, and fat-free.

  • Green Tea

    Green Tea is another very common type of tea. It’s often the choice of tea during specific cultural practices of healing with herbs. Scientists are continually finding positive health factors of green tea, as it contains catechins, natural antioxidants that help prevent cell damage and provide other benefits.

    These substances can reduce the formation of free radicals in the body, protecting cells and molecules from damage and agin.

    Matcha is a type of green tea that’s known for many positive components, just one of which is the ability to suppress appetite and increase metabolism, ultimately assisting in weight loss.

  • Chamomile

    Chamomile is a flowering plant from the daisy family. Who knew? It’s also 100% caffeine free, and so it’s the go-to if you’re looking for a perfect tea to have right before bed. Although traditionally used as a sleep aid and relaxant, chamomile has many other benefits. To name a few, chamomile has been known to help with muscle spasms, anxiety attacks, and even skin conditions such as psoriasis or eczema.
