If it sounds too good to be true...that's an adage that applies in the latest e-mail scam warned about by Absecon Police.

Police have received several complaints from people saying they received emails from a company asking them to participate in a Mystery Shopper opportunity, according to the Press of Atlantic City.

"The company sends a check for $3,000 and instructs the person to deposit it in the bank and keep $500 as salary, police said. The email states the remaining $2,500 should be spent on ReLoadit or Greendot cards at a convenience store.

After the cards are purchased, the company asks that a photograph of the cards be emailed to them, as well as a survey on the experience in the store, police said.

But a few days later, the bank notifies the victim the check was fraudulent and that he or she is responsible for any money that was withdrawn, police said."

You should never respond to business opportunities from people you don't know, through email or social media. Never wire money or send prepaid cards to someone you don’t know, and never give out your address or personal information online, police wrote on their Facebook page.

If you receive a suspicious email you may report it to the Internet Crime Complaint Center through ic3.gov/default.aspx.
