Police: NJ Mom, Daughter Shot Sitting in Car

A mother and daughter who were shot as they sat in a car in northern New Jersey were the intended targets of a gunman who has not yet been captured, police said.

Police Capt. James Sarnicki said the shooting occurred around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday on Middlesex Street in Linden.

The 41-year-old mother was hit several times in the torso and pelvis, while her 15-year-old daughter was struck in one of her wrists and had a graze wound to her face, Sarnicki said.

The victims were taken to University Hospital in Newark, where the mother is listed in critical but stable condition. The daughter has since been released from the hospital.

Witnesses told police a man in his 30s wearing a scarf that covered his face had spoken with the girl. They said the victims then both got into the car and the unknown shooter opened fire.

Sarnicki said the gunman reportedly fled on foot, possibly to a vehicle parked nearby.

The shooting was a targeted incident, and there is no threat to the community, Sarnicki said.

It's unclear if police have any suspects.
